Champion short description:

Renata is an extremely strong supporter when it comes to countering engages. She can revive and buff allies at the same time, fend off enemy threats and decide entire team fights with a well-placed ult. She is particularly effective against Assassins and Bruisers and is ideal for making aggressive ADCs shine. It therefore works particularly well with champions such as Draven, Ashe, Kalista or Varus.

But wait a minute! There’s a whole other way to play Renata, and one particularly good player showed us how. This guide is based on Keria’s absolute 1v9 performance, where he won 3-1 as T1 against GenG at Worlds 2024. He proved that you can play Renata with a very aggressive playstyle and not just play defensively and peel (protect the carries). I have analyzed the games and will now give you the most important insights I was able to crystallize.

Have fun with the guide!

Small disclaimer: The runeshards have not yet been updated, but the position is correct. You should therefore take attack speed, running speed and +65 life with you.

Description Skill Order:

Before we start with the most important facts, we first need to explain the skills and their order. If you’re already familiar with them, you can simply skip this section.

For Renata’s abilities, it’s a good idea to start with her passive ability “Investment” (P), as this is a major part of her strength in lane. With this ability, Renata’s first normal attack on an opponent is boosted by bonus damage percentage. At the same time, she marks the target, and when an ally attacks that enemy, the mark is triggered, dealing the same percentage damage again. Therefore, it makes sense to actively use autoattacks (normal attacks) to trade and help the jungler with early-game objectives, as this will constantly trigger the passive ability and deal constant damage.

Renata’s most important ability, however, is her “Rescue Screen” (W), which gives her or an ally additional attack speed and movement speed – whereby the movement speed only increases when moving towards an enemy champion. If the boosted target dies during this time, it is immediately revived with a rapidly emptying life bar. If you were involved in a kill before this life bar expired, you survive with some life – in other words, you stay alive. This ability is therefore primarily important because of the resurrection and not necessarily because of the buffs, as the resurrection only works if the target in this state scores a kill itself after death or was recently involved in one. Important: A target can only be revived once during this phase, and the cooldown is relatively long, especially at the start of the game.

Although the “Rescue Screen” (W) is a crucial ability, we do not invest the first points here, but first maximize the “Loyalty Program” (E), which is usually also skilled at level 1. The E skill is a powerful trading tool in lane and offers more shield and more damage with every point – an indispensable advantage in the early game.

Renata’s “Handshake” (Q) is only skill up once to level 2 and then maximized last. This ability shoots a quick, short-range skillshot that locks onto the target. The Q can be reactivated to throw the opponent in any direction. If the target is thrown into another champion, this causes a short stun – a useful CC (crowd control) function.

Finally, Renata’s best-known ability: “Enemy Takeover” (R). This slowly advancing wave of gas sends enemies into a frenzy. During this frenzy, enemies attack their allies at a greatly increased attack speed. But beware: if there is no other enemy nearby, you could also become a target. Sounds powerful? It is. However, you can avoid this ult quite easily as long as you don’t engage directly with Renata’s team.

Description of the build path:

The item builds for Renata are a little unusual, as her kit doesn’t have any really useful scaling. Although there are some AP scalings on her basic abilities, it makes little sense to use them as Renata’s goal is not to deal more damage. Instead, Renata should buy items that give her life and resistances and support the team at the same time.
