Champion short description:

Orianna is THE classic control mage in the mid lane. Since her release, she has consistently been one of the strongest champions in professional League of Legends. According to Riot, she is one of the most difficult champions to master, as Orianna players still gain percentage points in winrate even after thousands of games, despite her seemingly simple kit. This is only the case with a few champions. But don’t worry, I don’t want to put anyone off here. The basics aren’t that difficult, and anyone who learns Orianna will automatically learn a lot about the role of Control Mages in general. The time you invest in this champion is therefore worth a lot more than with other champions. But why is she so difficult to master? Orianna can manage an extremely large number of small things at the same time. She has to pay attention to her own position, the position of her orb, her high mana cost, her low cooldowns, she has to include autoattacks due to her passives, she can support her teammates, and it’s also important to find good ultis. Since you can train each of these aspects well, she is a very difficult champion to master.

Control Mages aren’t really the best class for SoloQ, but Orianna in particular has developed a very good playstyle that is perfectly tailored for SoloQ. This playstyle focuses on burst and compensates for the high mana costs with runes and her lack of mobility with items. I would like to show you the whole thing in this guide.

Description Skill Order:

Orianna’s passive ability is “Precise Clockwork”, which ensures that her autoattacks cause additional magic damage. This bonus damage increases when Orianna repeatedly attacks the same target. This passive ability helps Orianna with load-hitting and also means that you should include her autoattacks throughout trades and fights. In addition, this passive ability ensures that Orianna’s orb always returns to her when she is out of range. You can therefore use this ability to get the orb back to you quickly by moving out of maximum range.

At level 1, you skill Orianna’s Q, the “Command: Attack”. Orianna sends her orb to a target location within her range, and the orb deals magic damage to all enemies hit on the way there. The first enemy hit suffers the full damage, and all subsequent hits cause 30% reduced damage. Orianna’s orb then remains at the target location. This is one of the ways in which you can reposition Orianna’s orb. Due to the low cooldown and low mana cost, you can also use this ability to deal damage continuously. The orb also offers another advantage, as it gives you vision. This means you can facecheck bushes at a safe range with the orb and are therefore safe from traps. Make sure you take advantage of this and protect yourself from bushes that might contain enemies.

At level 2, take Orianna’s W, the “Command: Dissonance”. This ability deals high damage around Orianna’s sphere and creates a field that accelerates all allies and slows all enemies for 3 seconds. This ability deals very high damage, but also costs a lot of mana. Due to the high mana cost, you should only speed yourself up when rotating across the map if you have the Blue Buff, otherwise you will go Out of Mana (OoM) too quickly. You will mainly use this ability to combine with your Q for maximum damage. We also maximize the W first.

The E, “Command: Protect”, completes your skill set at level 3. Orianna’s orb moves to the selected ally and grants them a shield for 2.5 seconds. On the way there, the orb deals magic damage to all enemies it hits. In addition, the allied champion with the orb will passively gain armor and magic resistance from the E. Orianna can also cast this ability on herself, allowing you to negate some of the enemy’s damage in trades. This ability should often be used to bring the orb back when it’s in an unfavorable spot so you can hit the Q-W combo more easily afterwards. Also, make sure you try to have the orb with you when the opponent bursts on you, as you can negate a decent amount through the bonus resistances. Always maximize this ability last.

Orianna’s ultimate ability, “Command: Shockwave”, is of course always leveled up when you can. This ability ensures that Orianna’s orb sends out a shockwave that deals very high magical area damage and draws enemies hit towards the orb. You should always use your W together with the ultimate, as hitting the ultimate also guarantees your W. Since we maximize the W first and both abilities have an extremely high base damage, we get a high burst very early in the game. Your ult is also one of the ways you can decide teamfights and skirmishes in a second.

There are players who also like to put 3 points into W and then maximize their Q, as the cooldown decreases with every point in Q and you can reposition the ball very frequently as a result. However, the win rates of the two skill sequences are very close to each other and are also a question of personal preference. Since we are trying to maximize our burst, I recommend maximizing the W first, but in the end the decision is up to you.

Description of the build path:

Even though Archangel (Staff of the Archangel) is a popular item on Orianna, I would generally advise against using it in SoloQ. You simply need a lot of burst to carrien games, and therefore you should prefer Luden’s Companion. Instead, we balance out the high mana cost with Manaflow Band and Presence of Mind. You shouldn’t have too many mana problems with these.

In the lane, you want to get your Lost Chapter as quickly as possible and then work towards Ludens. You can, and should, also put the running shoes for 300 gold in between. However, I would only upgrade them in a few exceptions. We want to get our Ludens as soon as possible, as this item makes solo kills and trades much easier. The damage of Ludens doesn’t scale with levels, which means that the earlier we are in the game, the more damage we get. I would only upgrade the shoes early in matchups where mobility is extremely important, e.g. if you’re playing against a Syndra and need to dodge her stun.

Once you have your first item, I would get the Wizard Shoes as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Dark Seal is also a very good item on Orianna, as Orianna can get assists much easier than other champions by shielding her teammates. So if you have exactly 350 gold left, you can go ahead and get a Dark Seal. The latest time I would buy a Dark Seal is after completing the first item.

Now we come to the most important part of the item build, Stormsurge. This item synergizes perfectly with our previous item build. The more magic penetration you have, the more effective this stat becomes. Magic penetration is particularly effective when you have a lot of base damage, and as already established, we have more than enough of it thanks to our W, our Ult, Ludens Tempest and the effect of Stormsurge itself. It also makes up for our lack of mobility, and the item helps with repositioning in teamfights. You can also go for more aggressive plays, as the running speed of the Stormsurge proc makes it easier to get out. This item is perfect for Orianna in the SoloQ.

From the third item onwards, you have four good options. Rabadon’s Deathcap and Void Staff are the classic options and both should not be missing in a complete item build. If the opponent builds a lot of magic resistance, Void Staff is a good choice, otherwise Rabadon’s Deathcap. If you are the only source of magic damage in your team and the opponent does not build any magic resistance, Shadowflame is a good choice. In this case, you would deal absolute damage due to the amount of magic penetration, and the item also fits perfectly into our burst profile. The fourth option I would like to highlight is Zhonya’s Hourglass and explain when to build this item.

I keep seeing players make the mistake of building Zhonyas while they are behind. This is actually a huge mistake. Zhonyas is an aggressive item buy. If you’re behind, then to stay in the game you have to go for comebacks. You can only go for comebacks if you have enough damage. However, Zhonyas gives you much less damage than the other items, and even if you build Zhonyas, the likelihood of your opponent killing you is still very high as they are ahead. You should buy Zhonyas if you want to defend your shutdown and your opponents have a lot of Engage. It’s a way to protect your lead. If you are ahead, you have enough damage anyway, so you can buy defensive items as well. That’s a general rule of thumb in League: if you’re ahead, buy defensive items, and if you’re behind, buy offensive items.

In special cases, if the opponents have a lot of tanks in the team, I would advise against this build and focus more on DPS by buying Archangel (Staff of the Archangel) or Blackfire Torch and then Liandrys second. If you decide to go with Archangel, you can also forgo Presence of Mind and go with Cut Down instead.
